On December 18, 2020 at approximately 8:30p.m. Hamden Police responded to 640 Mix Avenue on the report of a “fight in progress.” Central Communications advised responding officers, that updated information revealed that the incident was in fact a “robbery with a firearm” and that the victim had been assaulted. The suspect fled from the area in an older model Nissan.

Shortly thereafter, Detective Mark Sheppard observed the vehicle traveling southbound on Dixwell Avenue. Officers attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop, however, the operator, Calvin Sherman, failed to comply. Sherman subsequently struck a snowbank at the intersection of Goodyear Street and Read Street. He immediately fled on foot. Detective Sheppard and Officer Scott Jason apprehended Sherman in the vicinity of Huntington Street and Butler Street. He was in the possession of a knife.

Further investigation revealed that while at Mix Avenue, Sherman illegally entered a storage unit and stole tools, valued at approximately $500.00.

Hamden Police arrested Calvin Sherman, 50, of 714 Orchard Street, New Haven. He was charged with Robbery in the 3rd Degree, Burglary in the 3rd Degree, Assault in the 3rd Degree, Larceny in the 5th Degree, Interfering with a Police Officer, Engaging an Officer in a Pursuit and Operating an Unregistered Motor Vehicle. Sherman is scheduled to appear at Meriden Superior Court on February 12, 2021.
