On May 16, 2020 Officer Keron Bryce was working an extra-duty assignment at Stop and Shop, 2335 Dixwell Avenue. He was approached by a Loss Prevention Officer, who informed him of a potential shoplifter.

Officer Bryce detained the shoplifter, Juan Acevedo, who was attempting to steal numerous items. Acevedo then advised Officer Bryce that he was infected with COVID-19 and began coughing. As Officer Bryce attempted to arrest him, Acevedo “attempted to spit” on him several times. Acevedo was subsequently arrested and transported to police headquarters. While at police headquarters, Acevedo advised officers that he is not infected with COVID-19.

Hamden Police arrested Juan Acevedo, 48, of 417 Kimberly Avenue, New Haven. He was charged with Criminal Attempt to Assault a Police Officer, Interfering with a Police Officer, Larceny in the 6th Degree and Criminal Trespass in the 3rd Degree. Acevedo, who was detained on a $25,000.00 bond, is scheduled to appear in court on July 6th.
