On July 22, 2018 at 2:26a.m. Hamden Police responded to Whitney Avenue, in the vicinity of the Route 40 Connector on the report of a motor vehicle accident.

Moments later, officers observed a motor vehicle that had struck a tree. Hamden Fire Rescue personnel arrived immediately thereafter and rendered medical assistance to the 3 occupants. A Hamden Fire Department Paramedic subsequently pronounced them dead at the scene. They have been identified as a 21 year-old Monroe resident, 26 year-old Bridgeport resident and a 29 year-old Bridgeport resident. Two of the occupants had to be extricated from the vehicle. Their bodies have been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for autopsies.

A preliminary investigation has revealed that the vehicle was exiting the Route 40 Connector at a high rate of speed. The vehicle crossed 4 lanes of Whitney Avenue before striking a tree.
