On May 24, 2018 Hamden Police responded to Family Dollar, 1245 Dixwell Avenue on the report of suspicious activity. Store personnel advised Central Communications that a male had entered the store “dressed in all black with a ski mask on.”

Sergeant Jason Venditto, Sergeant Michael Nawrocki and Detective Michael DePalma arrived shortly thereafter and observed a male exiting the store, wearing black clothing and a white plastic face mask. The male had what appeared to be a firearm tucked in his waistband. Further investigation revealed that the firearm was in fact a bb gun.

Officers learned that the male, who was later identified as Jesus Alvarado, was a former employee at Family Dollar that was terminated 2 hours earlier. He was promptly arrested and transported to police headquarters.

Hamden Police arrested Jesus Alvarado, 23, of 375 Mill Rock Road, Hamden. He was charged with Breach of Peace, Carrying a Dangerous Weapon and Possession of a Facsimile Firearm. Alvarado, who was detained on a $1,000.00 bond, is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on June 7th.
